Why Baggage Tagging Needs a Purpose-Built RFID Inlay
BAGIO M830, a new purpose-built RAIN RFID inlay engineered around the real-world challenges of baggage identification and handling.
Every baggage tag has one job: stay readable throughout the journey. That sounds simple. In practice, it is not.
A bag moves through check-in, conveyors, sorting systems, transfer points, carts, containers, aircraft loading and baggage claim. Along the way, its material, contents and orientation can all influence RFID performance. Hana RFID developed BAGIO M830 (TX3458-Series) around those conditions from the start.
BAGIO is not a general-purpose inlay adapted for baggage. It is a compact, application-specific RAIN RFID platform designed for baggage and luggage identification, with ARC Spec U certification providing independent validation for this demanding use case.
Start with the application
Hana’s approach to product development starts with understanding where an inlay will actually be used. Baggage tagging is a strong example of why that matters.
Suitcases range from lightweight fabric to plastic shells and thicker composite constructions. Their contents add another variable and can change the RF environment around the tag. At the same time, baggage rarely presents itself to a reader in one controlled position. It can be horizontal, vertical, tilted or moving as it passes through the handling system.
Optimizing an antenna for one ideal condition is therefore not enough. BAGIO was engineered to provide a more balanced response across the changing materials and orientations encountered during the baggage journey.
A compact design made for baggage tagging
At the center of BAGIO M830 is a 34 × 58 mm aluminum antenna paired with the Impinj M830 RAIN RFID IC. The compact BAGIO M830, measured at 34x58mm, gives baggage-tag manufacturers and converters flexibility in label construction while maintaining the RF characteristics required for the application.
Its distinctive narrow-edge-leading design was developed to support reliable global RAIN RFID performance across the UHF 860–960 MHz frequency range. Rather than concentrating performance around a single favorable orientation, the antenna is designed for orientation-robust readability as baggage changes position relative to the reader infrastructure.
The result is an inlay designed around the complete baggage-handling environment, not simply an individual read point.
Designed to handle material variation
Baggage materials and contents can detune a conventional UHF RFID antenna or absorb RF energy. That means the same tag construction can behave differently when applied to different types of luggage.
BAGIO’s antenna architecture was optimized with this variability in mind. Hana focused on material tolerance and a balanced RF response across representative baggage environments rather than maximizing peak performance under one ideal test condition.
For airlines, airports, baggage-handling solution providers and tag converters, that design philosophy is important: RFID performance needs to remain dependable as the physical conditions around the tag change.
ARC Spec U certified
BAGIO M830 has achieved Auburn University RFID Lab ARC Spec U certification. This provides independent validation against a recognized performance framework for baggage-tagging applications.
ARC certification adds an important layer of confidence for organizations evaluating RFID components. It demonstrates that performance has been assessed against defined requirements rather than relying only on manufacturer specifications.
For BAGIO, the certification supports the same principle that guided its development: design for the application, validate the performance, and manufacture it consistently.

From inlay performance to operational confidence
RFID baggage identification is ultimately about operational confidence. A tag has to support identification through multiple handling stages and under conditions that cannot always be controlled.
BAGIO reflects Hana RFID’s broader move toward application-driven inlay platforms: understand the electromagnetic and mechanical environment first, then engineer the antenna around it. This approach complements Hana’s focus on quality, repeatability and scalable manufacturing.
For customers, the value is straightforward. They gain a baggage-focused inlay with a compact form factor, a modern Impinj IC, global RAIN RFID operation and independently validated ARC Spec U performance.
Built for the complete journey
A baggage tag does not operate in a laboratory. It travels with the bag.
That is why BAGIO was designed around the journey itself: changing materials, unpredictable orientation, multiple read points and continuous movement. By combining application-specific antenna engineering with ARC-certified performance and high-volume manufacturing capability, Hana RFID has created a RAIN RFID platform purpose-built for modern baggage identification.
